My Research

This page is basically under construction since I don't know what I'm going to put here in its entirety. So for now, just a pic of me at Hamline University with my major research project on Rabindranath Tagore and Satyajit Ray (display info in back, painting of Tagore done by yours truly in front), and a few of my research papers (click on the icon below) related to Tagore and Satyajit Ray.

Tagore is best known as a poet who won the Nobel Prize for Literature with his book Gitanjali. Although most of my research relates to a school he developed in India, I have a profound interest in his literature which includes novels, poems, short stories, and essays. Although much of his work has been translated to English, some works are only available in Bengali, Tagore's native language, and those works that have been translated often lose the richness that Bengali lends to them. Therefore, I have been learning to read and write Bengali so that I can hopefully read some of his original works.

I became interested in Satyajit Ray for his wonderful portrayal in film of Tagore's short stories, and also his connection to Santiniketan, where he first met Tagore. So, although my major concentration is on Tagore, I decided to include Ray, for his insight on Tagore that can only come from his perspective.
